Do Something Great!
great works that glorify God
Part 3 – Get a Vision for Great Works
“Where there is no vision, the people perish” —Proverbs 29:18
Most of us set life goals that we think we can reach. These goals are too small. They do not qualify as great works. If we can do them in our own strength, we do not need God. But if it is humanly impossible to do these great works, then we must cry out to God. He will respond with supernatural power and make them great works for His glory.
“Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit.” —I Corinthians 2:9–10
When Nehemiah first became burdened with the need to rebuild Jerusalem’s wall, he realized that it would require the supernatural work of God. He prayed and fasted for three days, discerning God’s will. He then wholly applied himself to his project, which was later referred to as a “great work.” (See Nehemiah 6:3). After the wall was built, everyone that saw or heard of it perceived that it was a mighty work of God. (See Nehemiah 6:16.)
Whatever works we discern that God is calling us to do will be great because they represent our great God. This is what Solomon said to King Hiram: “The house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods” (II Chronicles 2:5).
William Carey exclaimed, “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.” Through seeming impossibilities, William Carey worked to change evil customs in India and translated the Scriptures into languages understood by one-third of the world’s population.
David Brainerd focused on bringing the transforming Gospel of Jesus Christ to Native American tribes whose members were often so inebriated that they could not understand his messages. Through fervent prayer and tireless efforts, he saw revival in many tribes before he died at the age of twenty-nine. David Brainerd’s life was a great influence on the life and work of John Wesley.
As a believer, the greatest step you could take right now for a bright and glorious future is to cry out for the Lord to give you a great objective in life, and then to faithfully obey His direction.
